Human Library Event: Weird

As student reading test scores plummet, libraries now offer books you don't have to even read. Think self-driving car.

To that end, the ever-trendy-lefty Petoskey District Library will be hosting a "Human Library" from 11 am to 3 pm, 8/3, at the Carnegie Building in downtown Petoskey. The first library in northern Michigan to do so.

From the press release: "Instead of paperback books, actual people are on loan for conversations. The concept is about acknowledging and challenging prejudice that we all carry towards one another. For that reason, the Human Library creates a safe space for conversation where topics subject to taboo, marginalization, or stigmatization can be openly addressed without condemnation. The people acting as Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias, or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage, or life experiences."

Patrons can stop by, tomorrow, and have a one-on-one conversation with a volunteer cosplaying, say, "depression" or an "asexual man."

And there's even an approved list of the stigmatized that accompanies this exercise (pictured). Oddly missing from the list are a conservative, Christian, pro-lifer, gunsmith, capitalist, victim of migrant crime, MAGA, a Men Don't Belong in Women's Sports advocate, or a constitutional sheriff.

Trust us. Those folks are frequently marginalized by - well, their local library.

Anyhoo spending a perfectly good summer day (when you could be reading a book at the lake) listening to psychobabble from strangers seems weird. Hard pass.
